Saving Your Produce

When at the supermarket, the produce section is a routine stop for most of us. Although slightly more expensive than canned or frozen varieties, fresh fruits and vegetables are super healthy and the unbeatable taste is great for cooking with. The problem with buying fresh produce is that we can’t seem to eat it fast enough after we get it home. Understanding produce savers will help keep you from having excess produce waste.

One produce saver method is dehydration. Fresh fruits are ideal for this process. Dried fruit can be purchased at the store prepackaged, but often contain additives and preservatives. Prepackaged dried fruit also tends to be more on the expensive side. Achieving this method yourself eliminates the harmful additives and keeps the fresh taste.

If you don’t own a food dehydrator, try doing some research on produce bags or other types of produce saver containers. These products claim to extend the shelf life of fruits by eliminating the addition of oxygen. Oxygen is the main reason fruits go bad so quickly.

Evaluate which types of fruits and vegetables you most commonly purchase, and do some research on them. Some fruits and vegetables last longer if refrigerated, while others do better without refrigeration. Spending a little time reading up on your favorite goods is a great method for saving your produce.

Dehydration also works well with fresh herbs. Herbs tend to lose their flavor fairly quickly if not used in a timely manner. Dehydrating them is a great produce saver method. By dehydrating herbs, you are also opening up a new door of growing an herb garden. Herb gardens are a fun, healthy way to add flavor to your meals.

A vacuum sealer is a great produce saver to use on fresh vegetables. The vegetables can be bought in large quantities, and then vacuum sealed. After this process, the vegetables can be frozen. This produce saver method deters freezer burn and locks in the nutrients of the product.

Canning is a produce saver technique that has been around for centuries. Canning is a great way to monitor what extra ingredients go into your food. Buying canned fruit at the supermarket usually means you are getting added sugar that isn’t needed. Natural sugars of fruits are enough to give them their great taste. Canned vegetables purchased at the store contain excess sodium which is unnecessary. Learning the method of canning will let you take control of what goes into your food. This is especially good for people who are on strict diets for health reasons.

Incorporating fresh fruits and vegetables into your meals is a great way to keep healthy and get needed vitamins in your diet. Using these produce saver methods will help you increase the shelf life of your purchases, and keep them tasting great.
